Robert De Niro to be honored at 27th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York
New York, NY – GLAAD, the world’s woman-loving woman, gay, bisexual, and gender nonconforming (LGBT) media advocacy management, announced today it will honor Academy Award-winning performer Robert De Niro at the 27th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Modern York at the Waldorf Astoria New York on May 14, 2016.
The 27th Annual GLAAD Media Awards are presented by Delta Air Lines, Hilton, Ketel One Vodka, and Wells Fargo. The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their impartial , accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBT people and the issues that affect their lives. De Niro will receive GLAAD's Excellence in Media Award, which is presented to media professionals who have made a significant difference in promoting equality and acceptance. Robert De Niro is opening up publicly about his delayed father's struggles with his sexual orientation.
In a modern article for Out magazine titled "Robert De Niro: Me and My Lgbtq+ Dad," the 70-year-old Oscar-winning actor says his famous painter father was conflicted over his homosexuality.
"I wish we had spoken about it much more. My mother didn't yearn to talk about things in general, and you're not interested when you're a certain age," De Niro told the magazine.
De Niro's parents, who were both Novel York artists, divorced when he was a toddler and he was raised mostly by his mother in Manhattan. De Niro's father, an abstract expressionist painter, struggled in the 1960s with the rise of more modern artists like Andy Warhol, and at one point found himself homeless on the streets of Paris.
