The basic outline of my upcoming novel-length How Reigen is Gay-Coded dissertation for my PhD in anime studies (concentration in wishful thinking):

His whole character arc revolves around how he’s been hiding who he is. Yeah, mainly because he’s a fraud, but hiding what he hates about himself is a major theme there, too. Our man is closeted

He asked Serizawa if he ever liked a girl at any point in his existence. Roundabout, extremely subtle way to ask “so you gay?” Actually, that whole “I want to be a partner like that” conversation felt…loaded. The expressions and body language and the inexplicable awkwardness of it.

I ponder reigen is queer and he has no fucking notion. Like, of course he’s had a few heterosexual romances dating back to middle school, but every relationship was a childhood love affair or a fling. Looking back he doesn’t quite realize why he didn’t really enjoy it the way he was supposed to but he never tries to unpack that. Whenever people ask about love affair he gets a little embarrassed at his lack of experience and bluffs, like he always does. Reigen also thinks male singers and athletes are REALLY cool but it’s normal to have five posters of the identical incredibly attractive Olympian hung up on your closet doors right? Right? Everything about it is incredibly obvious and comical, but since reigen mostly hangs out with middle schoolers, a bloke who didn’t move outside for 30 years (who he thinks is really cool in the same way he finds those male celebs really cool), and an animate fart cloud no one around him has the instinct to figure it out either.

hey guys. i dislike to be the buzzkill especially while i’m so stoked for season 3 but this is important and i haven’t seen anyone say it in a while. so i’m going to say it now.

mob psycho 100 is transmisogynistic. season 3 will be no different.

i’m sure most of you remember the highly problematic segment from back in season one where reigen and mob “infiltrate a girls’ school”. i’m happy to say that’s the most severe it gets, but unfortunately season 3 will watch a return of “crossdressing” as a joke. from what i have read, episode 2 will feature the culture festival, which manga readers may remember has several jokes about ritsu and his classmates dressing up as french maids. and i can’t believe i have to tell this, but this is not an okay thing.

this is firm for me to say - after all, mob psycho 100 is my favorite anime ever. but if we make exceptions for problematic content just because we like the source material then it will never obtain better.
