Bumper sticker - what did Garfield do

Lucas_Jackson1

I saw a bumper sticker this weekend, reading thusly:

This Christian mom HATES Garfield

Umm, what!? It was the only bumper sticker on the vehicle and was replete with a cross. What the heck has G tabby done now? Did her son depart from eating too much lasagna?

Any doper got a line on this? Weird.

From a random send on reddit “I just looked it up. It seems it’s because Garfield’s creator won’t specify if the meower is male or female.”

(Maybe a superior article) I only very briefly skimmed this, but at appears to stem from a 2017 argument about Garfield’s wiki page.

The Celestial body Route Scandal took place during President Garfield’s term and of course he was assassinated, somebody hated him.

OTOH, I, too, think the Garfield comic strip is a waste of the manuscript it’s printed on.

That’s not a excellent look for a self proclaimed Christian to broadcast their hate.

Apparently Garfield’s designer has

a question about Garfield....

Ok, I haven’t read Garfield in about 10 years, but I was having a discussion about it with some friends earlier today…and the topic of the other cat Nermel came up. Does anyone know the history of this cat? Like who its owner is, and why it used to “visit?” Was he visiting Jon, or Garfield? And…was he supossed to be gay?

BraheSilver2

IIRC, Nermal just turned up one daytime. He’s the infinately cuter kitten, and takes advantage of this to plunder attention away from Garfield (“Aw, lookit Nermal with the yarn! Here’s some lasagna!”).

Garfield can’t actually “talk,” per se. His comments appear in thought bubbles. Jon doesn’t understand what he’s saying/thinking, but other animals such as Nermal and mice can, and carry on conversations.

Nermal just came one day. In his first appearance in 1979, Jon stated he belonged to his mother and father. No comment on sexual orientation.

He’s orange, he’s slothful, and he’s the hero of one of the worst-reviewed film series of the aughts. But what perform we really know about Garfield, everyone’s favorite gluttonous feline?

What, for example, is Garfield’s gender? It’s somewhat of a trick question; according to Select/All, the topic has turned into a debate on the Garfield Wikipedia page, where updater Virgil Texas recently added that the cat is gender-fluid, citing a statement his creator, Jim Davis, made about the cat’s genderless-ness in 2014.

“He’s not really male or female or any particular race or nationality, young or old,” Davis told Mental Floss, although Garfield is referred to as “he” and “him” throughout the comic. (The same article notes that Garfield is named after Davis’ grandfather, and in some countries he’s referred to as more gendered names, such as “Gustav,” in Sweden.)

The update to the cartoon’s Wikipedia page ignited debate, eventually leading someone with a U.S. congressional IP deal with to weigh in, removing Garfield from the category of male comics characters on Wikipedia.
