A rabbi walks into a bar. You don’t need to know much about comedy to identify that sentence, or a variation thereof, as a classic setup to a joke. But what happens when the setup or, perhaps more accurately, the inciting incident, has much higher stakes? Like, for example: A Jew walks into a rendezvous of white nationalists.
A few years ago, Jewish stand-up comedian Alex Edelman did just that. Now “Just For Us,” the solo reveal he wrote based on coming face-to-face with neo-Nazis, is set to produce its New York debut.
Though “Just For Us” might be his most thoughtful meditation on American Jewish identity yet, it’s not Alex’s first solo display. In 2014 Alex performed his present “Millennial” at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, winning an Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Newcomer. The following year he did his second solo show, “Everything Handed to You,” at Edinburgh, selling out the entire run. Since then, Alex has been touring his solo shows and writing on television shows like “The Fantastic Indoors” and “Teenage Bounty Hunters.”
If you’re thinking that’s quite a bit of success for a relatively young comic, you’re absolutely amend — especially for someone who comes from an atypical backgr

It’s an initial Friday morning in May and comedian Alex Edelman is on a Zoom video call from a Los Angeles hotel. He has a bit of a bed head and says that he had to borrow the socks he is wearing, a detail he shares when I tell him I’m nervous about our interview because he’s a really “smart comic.”
“That is so nice but.. I’m not a smart comic. I had that realization today when I figured all the stuff that I forgot to pack for my trip to Los Angeles,” Edelman says. “I forgot dress shoes, a belt. I forgot to pack socks.”
Edelman traveled from his New York City area home for the premiere of Jerry Seinfeld’s Pop Tarts movie, “Unfrosted.” He makes an appearance in the film as the Apple Head character.
