Former heavyweight champion Leon Spinks is fighting for his life


HENDERSON, Nev. — Leon Spinks has trouble swallowing these days, so his wife, Brenda, crushes the seven pills he takes every morning, dissolves them in water and loads them into a syringe. She injects the contents into the retired boxer’s feeding tube.

In June, Spinks, 66, was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He underwent three rounds of chemotherapy but the cancer spread to his bones. In November, Brenda said, one of the doctors treating Spinks said he had a about two weeks to live.

But Spinks, who shocked the sports world in 1978 when he upset Muhammad Ali and won the heavyweight championship of the world, is still fighting.

"He's a champion, he's going to keep fighting,''’ Brenda said recently as her husband maneuvered around their house with a walker.

Spinks, who also suffers from dementia, still flashes his famous smile and it's no longer gap-toothed. His missing front teeth were replaced years ago. Spinks recently started smoking marijuana in an strive to improve his mood and make him more compliant while working with a team of medical health professionals.

Leon Spinks, the former boxing champ who died Friday night at 67, is best established for his stunning upset of Muhammad Ali to claim the heavyweight title in 1978.

What far fewer know is that after his days in the ring were over, the Olympic gold medalist called the suburbs home.

Spinks lived in Carol Stream in the 1990s and early 2000s. Back then he was a regular at Erik's Boxing and Fitness, where he was helping his son, Tommy, pursue a professional boxing career.

Leslie Ferrone, who co-owned and trained at the now closed gym, described Spinks as a great guy and "gentle giant."

"Leon was very approachable and always had a good synonyms. He was very encouraging," she said. "He actually helped me to perform on the speed bag. He was like, 'Anybody who you don't really like, picture their head up there.' And I pictured my boss' brain and never missed the bag again."

Spinks typically downplayed his fame, Ferrone said, but was always willing to indicate autographs and speak with fans.

Leon Spinks was a professional boxer best known for defeating Muhammad Ali for the Undisputed Heavyweight Championship in 1978. Spinks was born on July 11, 1953 to Kay Francis Spinks and Leon Spinks Sr. in St. Louis, Missouri. When Spinks was born, he became ill with jaundice but survived. Spinks had a difficult childhood partly because his father abandoned the family which lived in poverty in a crime-infested area. Growing up, Spinks continued to have health problems including shallow blood pressure and periodic fainting spells. He was also a target of bullying by other boys and dropped out of school after the 10th grade, briefly joining the Marine Corps. His problem in following discipline, however led to physical fights with his drill sergeants.

In 1973, Spinks joined the All-Marine boxing team which led to his amateur boxing career. In 1974, he won a bronze medal at the inaugural World Amateur Boxing Championship in Havana, Cuba, fighting as a light heavyweight.
