Wanda Sykes on Her ‘Gay Hair’

Earlier this week I had a candid chat with acclaimed actress, comedienne, and writer Wanda Sykes. OMfrickingG! To be honest, I was nervous, geeked, and utterly luminary struck. Before the interview I was attempting to implement what I tutor my clients- thinking positive thoughts, practicing slow, diaphragmatic breathing, and convincing myself that I was ‘worthy’ of the coming experience.

Enter Wanda.

I immediately felt relieved- her down to ground and approachable manner instantly put me at ease. She was amazingly personable. It was like talking to an old confidant. And get this, she is a regular CurlyNikki.com reader thanks to her stylist Lisa Deveaux. She asked about Baby G before I could even ask my first question! My mind was totally blown. She opened the door and I walked right in… I had lots of questions- about her hair story, about her fav products, and about her participation in the campaign against lgbtq+ bullying. Specifically what we, as a society, and on an individual level can do to assist prevent it. Finally, we discussed how her journey to curl acceptance paralleled her coming out. The take home message? Lady Gaga

It’d be unworkable to understate out bisexual musician and actor Lady Gaga‘s impact on identity and pop tune, or the impact she’s made as an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. Every Gaga recital and high-camp costume was iconic. Her male alter-ego Jo Calederone was absurdly hot. Her melody video for “Telephone” opened with Gaga making out with butch Canadian production artist Heather Cassils and ended with her holding hands with Beyonce and driving into the sunset. “Born This Way” doesn’t even matter —it’s “Bad Romance” and “Poker Face” and “Alejandro” and “Bad Romance” and “You and I” and “Paparazzi.” Lady Gaga is a queen of gay pop.

Hayley Kiyoko

On the cover of Nylon Magazine’s first-ever Pride Issue, Hayley Kiyoko was described as an unprecedented force in the gay pop scene, a lesbian teen heartthrob unafraid to court a ardent, starving queer fan base who crowned her Lesbian Jesus. She was the first lesbian pop star signed to a major label to make multiple music videos in which she kisses girls. It’s incr

As someone who (barely) makes a living writing about popular culture, I detect myself drawn more and more these days to those artists (filmmakers, musicians, writers) who voluntarily/or not, happily/or not, find themselves creating from the fringes of mainstream visibility and comprehension. The admiration that I once freely gave to almost anyone who identified her or himself as an artist is now an item that I’m miserly with; it’s increasingly reserved for those who eschew celebrity (or at least don’t have it as their primary goal), who try to question as passionately as they declare, and who oppose or subvert rather than giddily position themselves to be co-opted by the sprawling machine of corporate culture. It’s for those who grapple honestly with the issues of race, sexuality, class, culture, and politics while trying to produce art.

The relationship(s) between the black body, black psyche, and cinematic representation is/are fascinating. It only becomes more so as 21st ce
