Santa Ana Welcomes All

Santa Ana has grow an increasingly famous destination for members of the Homosexual community in recent years. The city is known for its vibrant arts and culture scene, as well as its diverse population.

One of the main draws of Santa Ana for LGBTQ+ visitors is the city's thriving nightlife. There are numerous gay-friendly bars, nightclubs, and restaurants in the city, many of which are located in the downtown area. 

The LGBTQ Center Orange County, a society center dedicated to advocating for the rights of and pursuing equality and recognition for the LGBTQ+ community, suggestions year-round programs, events, resources, and services, including the Brad Brafford LGBTQ+ Center on 4th.

Overall, Santa Ana's welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, lively downtown scene, and cultural offerings make it a great destination for LGBTQ+ travelers. Santa Ana has plenty to propose if you're looking for a darkness out with friends or a weekend getaway.

Every June, the United States celebrates Pride Month, commemorating the 1969 uprising at the Stonewall Inn that inspired a global movement toward LGBTQ+ equality. The well-off history of gay bars head up to and since the Stonewall Riots is thoroughly explored in The Bars Are Ours: Histories and Cultures of Queer Bars in America, 1960 and After, written by Lucas Hilderbrand, UC Irvine professor and chair of film and media studies.

The combination of a dearth of books investigating the history of gay bars and the closure of many gay bars around the nation catalyzed Hilderbrand’s motivation to tackle what he calls an “ambitious project” to “look at the role of homosexual bars in shaping community politics, subcultures and the ways in which we imagine what lgbtq+ public life could be in the United States.”

In this episode of The UCI Podcast, Hilderbrand shares how bars are dominant community cornerstones; what he learned on his extensive research journey examining archival accounts in all corners of the U.S.; and why he chose to brief this unique history with anecdotes, stories and even musical references.
