The first time I went to a gay club was nothing like how it is in the popular imagination. You know, those EDM-soundtracked visions of gay men experiencing a sudden instinct of belonging and liberation. Then they rip their shirts off and move like no one’s watching. My evening out was awkward, uneventful. Oh, and white. Very pale. I was 19 and a sophomore at New York University. My roommate, a gay pale boy, invited me out on a lacklustre Thursday with an obvious, slightly condescending, gay-fairy-godmother foundation to his conduct. “I can’t trust you haven’t gone out to a gay club yet,” he’d been saying to me for months. “Let’s transform that.” So we went to the lamest event you can think of: an 18+ darkness [New York’s drinking age is 21]. I can’t recall the name of the spot, or what Manhattan gaybourhood it was in, but I can remember how dusky the space was and how chaotic things felt. There was so much to take in: Muscled go-go boys dancing in jockstraps, muscled bartenders pouring drinks, and, again, muscled patrons standing around and devouring each other with their eyes. Bushwick’s Boyfriend is the novel day-to-night queer space we desperately needed
Queer people (i.e. me) often complain about the lack of gay spaces that exist outside of nightlife. And while I love going out as much as the next person, it’s a proof that we simply call for more daytime queer spaces where we can just chill, be sober and exchange ideas without an Ellie Goulding club remix drowning out our every thought.
Luckily, a new daytime/nighttime gay space, Boyfriend, is opening in Bushwick at the end of the month that promises to be a space of people and collaboration.

Boyfriend describes itself as a daytime-nighttime cafe/bar “that will cater to the queer society and care for the workers that build it,” per an Instagram announce. “It's a space with affordable pricing, friendly vibes, fairly compensated bartenders and baristas, yummy drinks and cutesy décor.”
