For most people, Columbia is a pit stop on the I-70 trek from St. Louis to Kansas City. For those lucky enough to live here, there’s so much more to love.

Katie: I moved here 3 years ago to start graduate school at Mizzou, and it didn’t take long for me to touch like warm and fuzzy about Columbia – that’s the Midwestern hospitality. After a little longer, I’d found so many other reasons to love it here. Because of the university, Columbia has is a liberal bubble in a surrounding sea of red. There are plenty of amazing cultural events happening, and a lot of distinct and wonderful people. Queer people and places aren’t strenuous to find, and the other residents of Columbia largely embrace the LGBTQ community.

    Hello,

    I've become very interested in Jefferson City after reading about it and seeing pictures. It seems to have a very attractive downtown with lots of historic buildings. I was wondering how intolerant towards gay people this part of Missouri might be? I have family in rural central Missouri and know that there can be a homophobic vibe down there. How is Jefferson City? Is it more cultured? Is there a gay bar in the city? Thanks!

    I have two gay cousins that live happily in Jefferson City, but it has not been effortless. Jefferson City, while a decent size small municipality, is still surrounded by a extremely rural area. It is beautiful, but very sleepy. I would look at Columbia, Mo., it's in central Missouri, but much more steady, as the University of Missouri is located there.
