T. D. Jakes Keeps Preaching Revival After Shooting Down Rumors
On the stage of First Baptist Church of Glenarden International, Bishop T. D. Jakes didn’t pay much time preaching from the lectern at center stage of the megachurch.
Instead, the televangelist walked endorse and forth in his dark suit and striped tie, switching a handheld microphone from his left to his right hand, sometimes facing the predominantly Black congregation of thousands gathered for an annual revival at the open of the year, other times turned toward the clergy and the choir members sitting on the large stage.
“The Holy Essence sent me all the way to the DMV to tell you this is your year to pivot,” the Dallas-based Pentecostal minister said to cheers and applause from the Washington, DC-area crowd, many on their feet on January 5. “You acquire to surround yourself with people who can pivot because they’re following who you used to be. Now they’ve got to follow who you include become.”

Bishop T.D. Jakes, pastor of the Potter’s House megachurch in Dallas, has again decided to exploit his position as one of the most influential African-American pastors in the country to publicly bash gay people. Jakes appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s unused talk show, Oprah’s Next Chapter, on Sunday and declared that he believes homosexuality is “condemned by the scriptures.”
Here’s a transcript of the exchange:
Oprah: “Would you say that everybody is embraced in your church?”
Jakes: “Oh, absolutely. Yeah, absolutely.”
Oprah: “Because you know that you’ve been accused of saying that gay people would not be welcome.”
Jakes: “Oh, no, no, no. That’s not true at all.”
Oprah: “That’s not true?”
Jakes: “Well, the consciousness in our community today is that if you don’t say you’re for same-sex marriage or if you state that homosexuality is a sin that you’re homophobic and you’re against queer people. That’s not true. I’m not called to offer my opinion. I’m called as a pastor to offer the scriptural position on it. It doesn’t mean I have to accept with you to love you. I don’t dislike anybody. I love everybody.”

For Bishop T. D. Jakes, the internationally known African-American evangelical star dubbed as the Black Billy Graham, his rantings against homosexuality have come advocate to bite him in the form of his oldest son’s recent arrest.
On Jan. 3, Jermaine Jakes was arrested in a sex sting for openly soliciting gay sex from an undercover vice detective in a universal park just a few blocks from his father’s church, The Potter’s House, a 30,000-member megachurch in Dallas, Texas.
The arrest warrant affidavit filed by Dallas police detectives on Jermaine Jakes stated the following:
“Suspect Jakes walked directly over to where Detective X was, and stood next to Detective X with his penis exposed through his unzipped pants. … Suspect Jakes committed the offense of indecent exposure by exposing his erect penis in a public place with his intent to gratify or arouse the sexual longing of himself. Celebrity pastor TD Jakes denies gay sex assault claim in his explosive defamation lawsuit
Megachurch pastor TD Jakes brought a defamation claim in November 2024 against a former pastor, saying explosive allegations of a decades vintage sexual assault were false.
Former pastor Duane Youngblood, 58, accused Jakes, 67, in a podcast last year of attempting to corner and involuntarily kiss him over 40 years ago.
Last month, Youngblood filed a motion to strike the defamation complaint. His brother Richard filed an affidavit in support of Duane's motion and claimed the megachurch donor preyed upon him years ago when they shared a hotel room during a ministry bed, alleging similar deeds to his brother's original accusation.
Richard wrote in his affidavit: '[Jakes] secured a room with two beds in it, and we went to the room for the darkness. That night, while I was laying in my bed, I felt Elder Jakes climb into my bed.
'He pressed his body against mine and asked, 'Youngblood, do you feel that?' He was referencing his erection that he was pressing against my backside.
