Jamal Bryant, Who Previously Called Homosexuality ‘a Sin,’ Criticized for Preaching at LGBTQ-Affirming Church

Pastor Jamal Bryant, leader of Recent Birth Missionary Baptist Church and famous for spearheading the recent “Target Fast” boycott, delivered a sermon on June 18 at the iElevate National Conference hosted by Bishop O.C. Allen III of The Vision Cathedral of Atlanta — an Diverse affirming church under the United Linear Pentecostal Church Fellowship.

Bryant, who has publicly criticized Black church leaders for “selling out” by accepting donations from Victim, sparked controversy among conservative Christian commentators with his appearance at the inclusive gathering. Several YouTube personalities known for critiquing the Ebony church and other faith-based events interpreted his presence as a tacit endorsement of homosexuality, which traditional Christian doctrine considers sinful.

During the conference, Bishop Allen introduced Bryant as “this great voice, our voice, our leader.” In his sermon, Bryant focused on the theme of overcoming shame — particularly shame imposed by others and internalized by individuals — as a barrier to fulfill

Gay rights organizations in St. Petersburg, Fla. are asking for prominent Baltimore pastor the Rev. Jamal Bryant to be uninvited as the keynote speaker at the 30th annual MLK Leadership Award Breakfast on Jan. 18 because of past remarks he has made about homosexuality.

The Tampa Bay Times reported that Bryant denounced homosexuality in a 2012 YouTube video, calling it a sin and put it on the identical level as gambling and drug addiction.

“Homosexuality is not the only sin,” Bryant said in the nine-minute-long video clip. “But it is a sin. It is an alternative lifestyle. It’s an alternative rebellion.”

Susan McGrath, chairwoman of the Pinellas County Democratic Party and president of the Stonewall Democrats, believes that his views of homosexuality are not in line with King’s message of love and inclusion.

McGrath also said that Bryant’s stance goes against St. Petersburg’s image as a diverse and welcoming city.

“The city has made a lot of progress,” McGrath told the Times. “It casts an unfair shadow on St. Petersburg.”

According to the Times, McGrath said she attended the banquet last year, but does not plan on attending this year

FIRST ON FOX: Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris visited the mega church of a controversial pastor this past Sunday in a key swing state, where she thanked him for his "leadership" and said she was honored to be in attendance to "celebrate" what he has "accomplished."

Harris attended a church service at the Georgia-based New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, which is under the pastoral leadership of senior pastor Jamal H. Bryant. The longtime pastor has repeatedly praised the antisemitic Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and said gay people should feel "uncomfortable" in their "sin."

Bryant, who introduced Harris as an "American hero" and "voice of the future," told the congregation that their unborn grandchildren are going to one day ask where they were on the morning of the church service and called on them to "make some noise" for their "fearless leader."

"Pastor Bryant, I thank you for your leadership," Harris said while delivering remarks for about 20 minutes in front of the New Birth congreg

For weeks the LGBT society has been calling for Rev. Jamal Bryant to be removed as the keynote speaker of the event following what they call Bryant's divisive statements about the gay community.

Bryant spoke this morning, but not without a bit of protest.

A very small team of protestors actually stood up and turned their backs on Rev. Jamal Bryant when he spoke.

"If this is truly a democratic society, I acquire the freedom of religion and I have the freedom of speech," Bryant told ABC Behavior News.
