Countway Library is hosting a free film filtering series in honor of Pride Month!
The Normal Heart is a 2014 American televisiondrama film directed by Ryan Murphy and written by Larry Kramer, based on his 1985 play of the same name. The film stars Identify Ruffalo, Matt Bomer, Taylor Kitsch, Jim Parsons, Alfred Molina, Joe Mantello, Jonathan Groff, and Julia Roberts.
The film depicts the rise of the HIV/AIDS crisis in New York City between 1981 and 1984, as seen through the eyes of writer/activist Ned Weeks (Ruffalo), the founder of a prominent HIV advocacy group. Weeks prefers public confrontations to the calmer, more private strategies favored by his associates, friends, and closeted lover Felix Turner (Bomer). Their differences of notion lead to arguments that threaten to undermine their common goals.
No registration necessary; drop-ins welcome!

GREG IN HOLLYWOOD

I’ve been smitten with Mark Ruffalo ever since seeing him in You Can Count on Me and own loved him in so many movies since – especially We Don’t Exist Here Anymore, 13 Going on 30, and last year’s The Kids Are All Right.
Mark chatted with Brandon Voss for The Advocate about a host of topics including his support of marriage equality his directorial debut, his hesitations about doing The Normal Heart, and the prospect of shaving his chest to perform the Hulk in The Avengers.
Here are some excerpts:
You’ll act gay activist Ned Weeks in Ryan Murphy’s film version of The Normal Heart, Larry Kramer’s seminal 1985 act about the dawn of the AIDS crisis. Frankly, you can’t screw it up.
No, I can’t. It’s huge. It’s the same scrutiny with me as the Hulk in The Avengers but from a whole alternative group of people. It’s a amazing honor, but I was hesitant about doing Normal Heart because it probably should be a gay actor. I brought that up to Ryan, but
As I explained to a friend, I can’t NOT watch/read the news because as a former full-on neurotic it’s scarier for me to NOT be in touch with what’s really going on than to imagine what is truly going on. As bad as the society might seem to be at the moment – and what it seems to me is lovely bad – I comprehend from experience I’d conjure up a hell of a lot worse left to my own devices.
Still, this was a week.
So after hearing about:
- The 30-year-old gay male makeup creator from Venezuela who was grabbed by ICE because of a few meaningless tattoos and deported to an El Salvador prison where no one has heard from him in more than a week.
- The mid-forties U.S. military veteran with terminal cancer whose experimental treatments keeping him alive were cancelled by Elon Musk’s DOGE bros because they were too….something.
- And the nice old ladies in red states across the country singing protest songs, or screaming, at town halls over the closing of local Social Security offices and the very real prospect that their earned benefits will soon disappear…
I turned to the movies and television.
This is not unusual and reminded me of the hour I binge-watched
Mark Ruffalo Responds to Critics on Casting Matt Bomer as Transgender
— -- Mark Ruffalo said he hears the concerns from the transgender community on the casting of Matt Bomer in a new movie, "Anything," and is sympathetic to those who would have wanted a transgender thespian in the film.
The movie focuses on a transgender sex worker, according to Entertainment Weekly, and Ruffalo is executive producer on the project. According to Ruffalo, the movie has already been shot.
The acclaimed actor tweeted about casting Bomer, who played his romantic interest in "The Normal Heart."
"To the Trans community. I hear you. It's wrenching to you see you in this pain. I am glad we are having this conversation. It's time," he wrote.
In another tweet he added, "In all truthfulness I suggested Matt for the role after the profound life I had with him while making 'The Normal Heart.'"
The response comes after leaders in the transgender community wanted a transitioned woman to play the role.
A column from trans musician Mya Byrne for The Huffington Announce read, "Your new movie ... forgot the most important part of these kinds of
