When Kurt Busch finally won the Daytona 500, NASCAR’s crown jewel, his mother, Gaye Busch, was assist home in North Carolina, not at the path. But she was right there in spirit, cheering him on with tears streaming down her deal with. After years of heartbreak and near misses, Kurt crossed the finish line in the black No. 41, making the one race that had always eluded him finally his. Gaye described the moment with raw emotion: “I just couldn’t believe it. We’ve all been waiting for this. He kept finishing second. It’s such an honor to complete this, and we’re just so thrilled for him.”
Kyle Busch knows that pain and sacrifice too adv. In 2015, he crashed hard at Daytona, breaking both legs. Gaye never forgot that day. “She just wanted us to come home,” Kurt once said, revealing his mom’s dread of superspeedways. Despite all that, she stood strong. And now, on a day meant to honor mothers, it was Kyle’s turn to peer back, and forward, with gratitude and heart. On this Mother’s Day, Kyle Busch didn’t just race. He paused to honor the two most key women in his experience, his wife, Samantha, and his mother, Gaye.

When it comes to mothers in NASCAR, Gaye Busch is in rarified air. The approachable matriarch with an easy laugh is one of only two mothers – along with Martha Labonte – to know what it is like to have not one, but two sons win NASCAR Sprint Cup championships.
Gaye and Tom Busch raised their boys, Kurt and Kyle, in Las Vegas, where they learned to race at various short tracks, including the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, before moving on to fulfill their destinies as motorsports superstars. Gaye worked for the Clark County Institution District and Tom drove a mobile tool truck for a living. Gaye watched Kurt defeat the 2004 championship and was just as elated to see Kyle pursue form by taking last year’s title.

With Mother’s Day coming on Sunday, LVMS Media Relations Manager Neal Reid spent some time on the phone with Gaye from her Mooresville, N.C., dwelling to talk about her boys and what it’s appreciate to be the mother of a pair of NASCAR Sprint Cup champions.
Q: What do you remember from the early Don Coble | Florida Times-Union Although she has two sons in it, Gaye Busch won't watch today's AMP Energy Juice 500. She doesn't like restrictor-plate races at the Talladega Superspeedway. The cars are too fast, the traffic is too congested, and too many cars end up on their roofs. So she doesn't watch. Even when youngest son Kyle won at Talladega last year, mom was crying when she arrived to Victory Road. They weren't tears of joy; they were of relief. "My mom, she hates restrictor-plate racing anyways, ever since the beginning," Busch said. "It doesn't matter if we come out of here with a win, she's still coming to Victory Lane crying because she was like, 'Oh my God, you got out of it OK and nothing happened.' She's a ball of nerves when we come to these places. I'd have to say grandma's the same way." Most of the drivers in today's race accept the very true possibility of being involved in a high-speed crash.
