Quick Take:

The shooting at a gay exclude in conservative Colorado Springs has been painful for LGBTQ people in rural and conservative parts of California.

After five people were shot dead in a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Matthew Grigsby thought about Club 501.

It was the only lgbtq+ bar in Redding, a Northern California city of 93,000 that, like Colorado Springs, is deeply religious and conservative.

There, Grigsby felt comfortable holding hands or dancing with another man.

Club 501 closed this summer, leaving Grigsby and other LGBTQ people without a place where they could be themselves. The news from Club Q in Colorado Springs was another gut punch.

“There’s no secure place anywhere,” Grigsby, 53, said, his voice shaking. “It doesn’t matter where we are or what we perform. People are going to come for us.”

In politically red stretches of California — from the old logging towns in the north through the dusty farmlands of the Central Valley — the Colorado Springs massacre was yet another devastating reminder of how difficult and lon

COLORADO SPRINGS

Colorado Springs is the state’s second-largest city, but it’s first in the hearts of many visitors as a place of spectacular beauty with dozens of family attractions, natural landmarks and unique museums.

Although many towns and cities in Colorado were settled by miners and ranchers, Colorado Springs’ appeal was climate and culture.

Known as Small London in its early days, the city was founded by Gen. William J. Palmer in 1871. A Civil War hero and railroad magnate, Palmer influenced much of the state’s settlement, but Colorado Springs was his dwelling. It had plenty of “civilized” attractions — opera houses, fine hotels and restaurants.

Things to Notice & Do Today
The city sits at the foot of one of America’s most famous landmarks, Pikes Peak, upon whose summit Katharine Lee Bates was inspired to record “America the Beautiful.” Tourists still converge on the summit, where they can drive, ride the Pikes Peak Cog Railway or even hike to its 14,115-foot summit.

COLORADO SPRINGS — Matthew Haynes opened Club Q 21 years ago with the goal of making sure LGBTQ people in Colorado Springs had a long-lasting place to call home.

He opened a bar and nightclub, yes. But Haynes says Club Q has always been a community center more than anything else.

“There possess been so many happy stories from Club Q,” he told The Colorado Sun on Sunday morning. “People meeting and relationships being born. So many celebrations there. We’re a family of people more than a place to have a drink and dance and leave.”

A man armed with a rifle tried to shatter that family late Saturday when he walked into Club Q and opened fire on patrons, killing at least five and injuring 18 others. A source familiar with the matter told The Colorado Sun that law enforcement has evidence suggesting the shooting was a detest crime.

Haynes wasn’t at the club when the shooting began. He said he arrived as the attack was ending and that he’s now trying to aid his employees and patrons perform through the aftermath.

Police credit at least two patrons with stopping the attack.

Haynes, who is a co-owner of Club Q, said he opened the club because Colorado Springs’ main gay prevent at the
