Pulau Gaya is the largest island in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, it occupies an area of 15 square kilometres (3,700 acres). Several ridges, rising to more than 180m with a max of 300m, form the backbone of Pulau Gaya. This island is the closest in proximity to downtown Kota Kinabalu. The name “Gaya” is derived from the Bajau word "Gayo" which means huge. Pulau Gaya is covered with dense virgin tropical forest. It has been a forest reserve since 1923. The island has hiking trails and a couple of miniature to medium sized resorts of which one is dwelling to the Marine Ecology Research Centre. It is also host to a very large (and growing) stilt village located just reverse the KK waterfront. The major beach area on Gaya Island is located at the Police Bay. Over 400 metres of alabaster sand gently slopes out to the sea making Police Beach an optimal place for swimming and snorkelling in crystal clear water.

Tunku Abdul Rahman Park is a state park located in Gaya Bay, 3 kilometers offshore from Kota Kinabalu. Named after Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, it was gazetted in 1974 as Sabah’s second national park. The Park covers an area of 50 sq kilometers comprising 5 islands, their surrounding reefs, and sea. Its main objective is to protect their fauna, flora, and marine eco-systems. Geologically, the islands are part of the Crocker Range but became isolated from the massif when sea levels rose after the last ice age.
The names of the islands are symbolic of their history and early discoverers. Pulau Gaya (‘big’), Manukan (‘fish’), Mamutik (‘for shell collection’), Sapi (the sound of a mowing buffalo), and Sulug (commemorating the ancestry of the Sulu peoples of Sabah). Initially, the Park covered two islands - Gaya and Sapi. In 1979, the Park’s boundaries expanded to include three other islands : Manukan, Sulug, and Mamutik.

The Kota Kinabalu International Airport KKIA (airport code BKI) is located to the south of the city and is 8.5 kilometres from the city centre. This journey can be easily done by private car, taxi or shuttle bus. A taxi will charge around RM 30 each way for a pre-booked taxi. Arrivals are on the lower level with departures on the upper level. At busy times enable 30 minutes from the city centre to the airport.
